It's been a long time since I've touched any sort of pixel art project, so here's something new in that category.

One of our up-and-coming pixel artists, *ryan-gfx, has started a new pixel community project featuring totem pole carvings. I decided since this would be a smaller project, I should give it a try and refresh my pixel art skills.

I decided to do a mock-up of the batty characters created by `liquify to honor her wonderful contribution to myself and many others. I did my best to replicate the character while keeping that "totem look." As you can see, the wings have cracks in them. I felt this would add some detail and make the wood texture a little more believable.

It's a simple design, I know, but I had fun with it and I think it'll fit nicely in the totem project. Thanks for looking!

I like how you got the depth with the highlights. Shows more depth in a small way, using the gradients and cel-shaded shines there. Very impressive, my friend.

That's pretty cool, having one of those battys on a totem pole. Provides some matter for thought as to which other icon trends could be slapped against a totem pole. :P

Those cracks in the wings are a pretty good idea, however, I think they look a little bit too uniform. I think the cracks would look more realistic if they were dark (deep) along the edge, then getting lighter (less deep) as they near the center. Then again, it's been a while since I've seen cracked wood. :P It seems logical to me, though.
Another little thing that kinda bothers me are the eyes - they kinda look as if they are just glued on there, instead of being part of the object. Maybe some 'inset bevel' style shading around the eyes would fix that.

I like the comical look about the whole - it kinda reminds me of the Super Mario games for some reason (I think that reason is Yoshi - but yeah, I'm not sure).

I love it, quite nice actually. Definately kept the batty look going while having that totem look as well. Great work.

Looking at those big-recognizable-battyz ears that puts a smile on my face. (Maybe I just like big ears?) What a great section to add to the totem. Maybe this should be on the bottom since it's the biggest in width that I've seen so far.

:O

Look'n good. And $dj-designs basically mentioned what I would have said .. but I sort of like the cracks the way they are. So to each his own as this is yours .. and looks sweet as is anyway.

Nice pixeling and shading. An idea to further enhance the cracks would be to pixel out white pixels to give them a little "depth". If you took the cracks and duplicated that layer, moved them one pixel to the right and make them white and set the layer opacity to around 10%, and maybe delete some areas. Just a thought, nothing necessary.

I had actually thought about doing this but didn't want the cracks to be too obvious. I'm not sure why, but it just seemed like they should be there but hidden. Perhaps I should give your idea a thought again and see what it looks like with some depth though. Right now the cracks look a bit too simple I guess.

Heheh, nice. I took a look at that pixel art project... Maybe I'll participate, but I haven't done any pixel art in ages. o.o
