The Comment Revolution: Part 2

Journal Entry: Tue May 11, 2004, 6:17 AM

The Story So Far

The Comment Revolution has been thoroughly written about in 3 journal items. Please read all 3 before making a comment.

:earth: The Comment Revolution
:earth: The Comment Revolution: Part 2
:earth: The Comment Revolution Progress: Slow And Steady

With quite a huge response to the first part of this movement, I've decided it's time to move along with Part 2.

What the Comment Revolution Is

After many comments on the first part of this movement, most people understood what we wanted to accomplish through this plan. Some people didn't however, and I'd like to clear up a few things.

Deviation comments on deviantART are mostly short, undetailed and not very useful to the artist. This needs to change.

The Comment Revolution is about bringing that change. It's about educating deviants about the usefulness of leaving well thought out and relevant comments on art here at deviantART. It's about the learning process for both the artist and the critic. It's about respect, recognition, and knowledge. And it's about weeding out the comments that don't fit the above description.

You'll notice I specified deviation comments thus far. This is not to say that journal comments, user page comments, news comments, and forum posts are not in the same category. In fact, I think we would all like to see more thoughtful comments on news items and in the forums. As far as journal and user page comments go, I doubt we need to worry about the length or usefulness of such comments. These are places for leaving praise, humor, personal thoughts, and other community oriented comments. I would assume if these sort of comments are not rude and do not attack deviants, they are fine the way they are.

It is also about the Rating System. Many of you don't know anything about the system or what it is used for, nor the reason you should be using it. This needs to change. It's there to help you, me, and everyone else here at deviantART. But how can it help us if no one is using it?

What the Comment Revolution Isn't

The Comment Revolution isn't about denying everyone who doesn't comment well a place here at deviantART. It's not about ripping apart an artist with negative criticism. It's not about removing deviants who are here just to browse the site. It's not about the English language. It doesn't involve abusing the rating system. It's not about removing comments that don't fit the criteria.

We in no way wish to alter deviantART in a way that would make those people who are here just to browse obsolete. We aren't trying to eliminate all comments that aren't "good enough." This is about education really. Educating deviants about how and why good comments effect the person you leave them with. Educating deviants on the art of critique. Educating them on the rating system and why they should use it.

Don't be fooled. Even the shortest comments are useful to artists. 200 comments of "great work, I love it" show that the piece is at least well liked and that the artist did something right. Those comments build a bit of a relationship. But leave a comment that is insightful, interesting, and gives the artist your point of view, and you can increase that relationship tenfold.

The Next Step

Here's what I propose, and this of course is up for debate, as this isn't just my personal project.

We need to:

:pointr: Continue Spreading The Idea

142 comments and counting, all because of those of you who've decided to try and get this message to others. Thank you, all of you. This won't work if I'm the only one preaching it. All those links in signatures and journal entries are really paying off. The more support and ideas, the better.

:pointr: The Plan

I have my own little plan in my head, but I'm sure many of you have ideas on how to go about doing this the right way. We must try not to offend people or scare them into thinking deviantART is turning into an "elitist-only" site.

:pointr: User Guides and Education

In my last entry, *ivyc mentioned her interest in coming up with a "critique guide" for users here. I applaud this idea and want to get a group together to form this guide. If you are interested, please let me (and *ivyc) know ASAP. I have seen a few unofficial deviantART critique guides here and there, but I can't remember where any of them are or who they were done by. If you know or can find out, contact those deviants so that we may get their help on this part of the project.

There is much to put in this guide, so we'll need a lot of people for this part. Those of you who comment purely on the design side (photographers, designers, etc.) and those of you who base your comments on past experiences or the emotional aspect of the piece.

Also, we have the Rating System. As some of you know, this system is not fully finished. However, it's potential use is what is important, and we need to educate deviants on using it now for future results. I will contact a few staff members for more on this system and what we can tell deviants, since the FAQ doesn't go into much depth.

:pointr: Recognition

At this time I would like to recognize the following two deviants who have shown extraordinary talent in leaving comments here at deviantART. These deviants have displayed exactly the kind of forward thinking that The Comment Revolution is all about.

*inziladun has been with us only 6 months and has shown that he is the type of member we are looking for. His comments are not only lengthy and easily noticeable, they also go into wonderful detail about why he does or doesn't like something in the piece he comments on. He has also shown great interest in helping along the progress of educating community members on the importance of good feedback.

`coshdaddy is, in simpler terms, a ShoutBox veteran. But the "short and fun commenting" that happens there doesn't apply when it comes to his comments on art. They are some of the best deviantART has seen thus far. Not only does he analyze things from a design and technical point of view, he also includes some of his personal feelings or experiences as well.

These two deviants have recieved a 3 month subscription to deviantART from yours truly. I hope this helps them with their commenting (browsing ad-free and with all the extra features). They truly deserve it.

:pointr: Recommendations

I appreciate all the recommendations people left me for outstanding commenting deviant recognition in my last entry. I viewed all of them and chose the above two deviants for now. I've got others in mind as well.

Please feel free to let all of us know if you run across someone who continually leaves great comments. These people are real assets to this community and should be recognized as so.

:pointr: Linking To The Comment Revolution

Those of you who had been linking to the previous entry, you can update your links to this entry or leave those links be. I will be updating that entry to let users know of this newer journal. That way everyone should be able to find things.

Thank you again to all of you who have been helping this thing spread. Feel free to put the link to this journal in your signature or journal if you haven't done so already. Help support this movement in commenting at deviantART!

I'd also like to note how many responses we got to the previous entry from people who read the information and were at least enlightened enough to realize they had been leaving "lazy" and short comments, and that they should perhaps try and comment better, for their sake and the sake of the artist. In just one journal article we changed a few people's minds about commenting. Imagine what we can do once this thing gets noticed.

Also, if you want to link to this journal in your signature, I'd suggest (purely up to you though) using the same line that I use for easier recognition:

After some mild research (and just dumb luck of seeing your name highlighted in my recent visitors user page section) I have finally solved my Sherlock Holmes-esque mystery of the evening. The Case of the Mystery Subscription.
:sherlock:

First thing I'd like to say is how honoured, and honestly surprised that I was deemed worthy to get any amount of charity for trying my best to comment on works. I had always felt that my presence was more under the radar, so I never really did any of it for attention, but it's definitely nice to see that some people are watching. That description you left of me is very flattering as well (though I don't consider myself a Shoutbox Whore...but I guess my shout numbers proceed that particular description a little too strongly) and I will now take it upon myself to spare a little more time and thought into commenting as a responsiblity for being given this gift. I also think that your bold move of "But this doesn't mean he isn't detailed and intelligent when it comes to commenting" might come off as a little offensive, or at least demeaning. ;) But I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Second thing is that I'm surprised that I haven't stumbled across this Comment Revolution idea before. I've actually been noticing a significant immergence of this type of mentality around. % leodadominico even held commenting tutorial sessions in the shoutbox a few months ago, trying to help educate and accent people's ability to look and reflect upon what they read/see/hear. Many people I've been watching have been encouraging longer and/or more detailed comments by either subjected a bit stronger with the rating system, or just doing it themselves to help spread it around. I think what you're doing here is a great benefit to the community, and using your influence can really help bring out the quality that so many here are capable of. I, personally, am not too fond of the rating system (I have a bad issue with judging people. Pathetic, no?) but I think that it many cases it really can encourage the betterment of the art community here if it is finally used properly.

Thanks a whole lot, and I tip my proverbial hat to your cause. And good choice with *inziladun, as well. He leaves some serious comments, himself.

*junkpile:iconjunkpile: May 10, 2004, 11:06:36 PM
I too agree that the level of effort put into commenting on peoples work is rather appauling. Personally, I much rather prefer 1 good, detailed comment that can help me improve my work, than 15 useless 'Nice work' comments.

Me, ~junkpile, and a good friend of mine ~vetteh have been putting effort into ours for a while now, with both of ours seemingly always being at least 3 or 4 paragraphs long, with good detailed positive feedback, as well as us constructively stating what we don't like about the image, and any possible ways of improving it.

I only just realised after reading back through the list that you are giving out subscriptions. While I would like one, I certainly don't want to come across as someone that only comments to get these. I've been leaving large comments for over a month now, and my feedback is what drives me to do more. The amount of messages I get back saying that it was the best comment ever really motivates me to do even more.

Anyway, I don't want to make this too long, as I'm not really helping anyone with it, so I hope this 'revolution' gets up and running so I this community can constructively operate a whole lot better. It's definetly a good thing your motivating.

Kind regards,
Ryan.

I just read some of *inziladun's comments, theyre awesome man. Excellent job, so much effort and so much positive feedback.

You certainly deserved what you got. Keep up the great work.

man , I've said it before ..but I really love ur idea..:
the idea of the user guide is great .. but if I'm not mistaken , leodaminico has already made something like that .. no ?
so maybe you can just link to that..
I'm very glad that the mystery of the rating system will be resolved.. :)
just wondering : if you rate a comment.. who will see that ..
the one who gave the comment , the one who gets the comment.. both .. or maybe a third person ? ( admins).
it seems like the rating system has a lot of potential .. but it's all so vague..
but now I can see light at the end of the tunnel approaching :)

anyway I also wanne congrat those two artists who received Recognition.
hope their will follow many in the future..

I'm also very curious about ur litlle plan .. mm just got an idea.. suddenly popped in my mind :
what about making a new status.. besides subscriber, senior member , dev staff, .. their should be a "elite commenter" or something like that :)
that way we don't offend people who are just browsing DA and at the same time we encourage people who are taking the time to write decent comments..

well it's just an idea..
good luck with your great project .. I'll do as much as I can to spread the word about it ..
!inziladun:iconinziladun: May 11, 2004, 5:16:57 AM
Like *coshdaddy, I am quite overwhelmed by, but at the same time extrmely grateful for this sudden recognition.. I had a similar sensation to what * coshdaddy was describing, I thought there was an error in my Messages-folder at first! :D Thank you so very much for this.
I went through several of coshdaddy's comments, and I must say I was very pleased to see their quality and depth. His comments have such a personal and appreciative feel to them, they are truly his own and that is something pricelessly valuable. Kudos to you for that *coshdaddy, brilliant work.
This whole Revolution has been something almost surreal for me, despite it only now beginning to kick off.. This is precisely the sort of thing I had been planning on bringing to light myself, and I just want to congratulate and praise *splat for doing so, and in such an effective and widespread way!! :worship: :worship:
I've also been oggling at the huge response the Revolution has gotten; this could not have started more favourably, and for that we need to thank everybody who has had something to do with this, that is, each other! :D

The Critique Guide you have in mind sounds like a very large and very meaningful project.. If I can help in any way I'd be happy to. :) And I will link this 'Part 2' in my sig, for sure.

:salute: Viva la revolución! :salute:

:pointr: I also think that your bold move of "But this doesn't mean he isn't detailed and intelligent when it comes to commenting" might come off as a little offensive, or at least demeaning.

Agreed. I shall have to edit that. I didn't mean it in a negative way. In fact, I meant it to be humorous, but I realized as soon as I submitted it that it might not sound that way.

:pointr: Second thing is that I'm surprised that I haven't stumbled across this Comment Revolution idea before.

It's just starting to get off the ground. Slowly but surely....

:pointr: I, personally, am not too fond of the rating system (I have a bad issue with judging people. Pathetic, no?)

Understandable. Some people aren't comfortable with it, and that's fine. But I believe educating people about why it's good and how to use it would be beneficial to everyone.
